Armature Structure and Cloud : by P3 Graduate Students

As a part of the 2006 open house exhibition at crown hall, this structual inflable PVC cloud supported by a rigid armature was hung over the graduate studio space in an effort to define a sense of place.

1) A series of tests were done to experiement with the PVC vinyl. Using a hot iron, the edges were melted to form a seam.

2) The PVC is rolled out and ready to be cut.

3) Ironing the seams...

4) Nozzles were ironed to each inflatable object for easy filling.

5) The pieces are made of three types. Using modular pieces allowed us to fabricate and assemble quickly. Each is given several rivet holes for means to attach to each other.

6) The armature and intermediary structure are bolted to the lockers and suspended 25 feet into space.

7) The cloud is composed of dozens of long tubes. This shape was chosen for its structural abilities. Its reliance on the armature is minimal.
